Join us at The Aryan Gallery at Pars Place for a conversation with artists MJ Kavian and Chee Keong Kung, moderated by Art Director, Roya Chadab. Bringing together two distinct yet deeply resonant practices, the discussion explores the expressive power of line across cultures, disciplines, and materials.<\/p>\n

MJ Kavian, an internationally recognized ceramic artist, draws from traditions of calligraphy and poetic mark making, transforming clay into vessels of memory and language. In contrast, Chee Keong Kung\u2019s line driven compositions, informed by architectural precision and contemporary abstraction, investigate movement, structure, and spatial tension.<\/p>\n

Together, their works create a compelling visual and conceptual dialogue where ancient sensibilities meet contemporary inquiry. One artist channels the fluidity of script and the intimacy of the hand, while the other constructs layered environments through line and form. Intersection<\/em>\u00a0brings together the abstract paintings of David Carlson alongside the mixed-media paintings, sculptures, and installations by Chee Keong Kung. Both artists explore concepts of space and time through graceful, undulating forms. Their geometric compositions are filled with rhythmic energy, creating an abstract narrative characterized by bold gestures, subtle transitions, and a commitment to materials and process. The integration of layers, shadows, textures, and forms in their work invites viewers to uncover hidden meanings.<\/p>\n

Intersection<\/em>\u00a0is curated by Sarah Hardesty, an artist and associate professor of art at Marymount University.<\/p>\n

Vibe\/Vibrance, The Brentwood Arts Exchange (Mar 24-May 17, 2025)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Vibe\/Vibrance, a group exhibit featuring Chee Keong Kung, Jenny Nordstrom, Sookkyung Park and Alexandra Sherman, will create a zestful and immersive environment \u2013 encompassing various disciplines and filling the main gallery with color and purpose. Kung\u2019s geometrical assemblages provide structure and chaos, where Nordstrum\u2019s photographs depict aged, but resonant structures from around the world. Park and Kung extend their artwork beyond the walls, creating an expansive viewing experience, while Sherman\u2019s drawings bring an otherworldly, yet semi-historical perspective to the earth and what lies within. Together, these artists provide illustrious approaches to their craft that combine into a beautiful, yet unexplainable story.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial, Ridderhof Martin Gallery & duPont Gallery at The University of Mary Washington (Nov 7, 2024-Jan 19, 2025)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The University of Mary Washington Galleries is pleased to welcome back the Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial exhibition in 2024.<\/p>\n

Begun in 1997, this juried exhibition highlights new developments in painting by talented artists within our region. The 2024 open call received a record 593 entries and this year\u2019s exhibition features 76 impressive and varied paintings from 69 artists working across eight states and the District of Columbia. From this expressive array, one work is purchased by UMW Galleries to become part of the permanent collection and three cash awards are given. Awards will be announced at the opening reception.<\/p>\n

The Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial is made possible by the generosity of Alfred Levitt. Levitt was a New York artist and intellectual with an abiding interest in encouraging young painters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

In support of local visual artists and District art nonprofit organizations, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities acquires fine art from artists living and working across the metropolitan region. The ongoing and annual acquisition of art becomes a part of the\u202fArt Bank Collection and is then loanehttps:\/\/dcarts.dc.gov\/page\/art-bankd to District Government agencies for display in public areas and offices of government buildings.\u202fThe Art Bank Collection, which started in 1986, has over\u202f3,000 artworks.<\/p>\n

DC Art Now 2024<\/strong>\u202fis an annual exhibition of selected work by finalists for the FY25\u00a0Art Bank Program grant. It features many of the most exciting emerging and established artists working in the DC metropolitan region today. Collectors’ Night 2024 at Washington Project For the Arts (Auction on Artsy Apr 19-May 4; Gala May 4, 2024)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

For 44 years, WPA\u2019s art auction gala (called Collectors\u2019 Night) has been a staple of the DC art scene. Collectors\u2019 Night is not only an opportunity to celebrate with our community, but also provides essential support for the powerful, artist-driven contemporary art programs that WPA produces right here in DC. Proceeds from the auction directly benefit the participating artists and WPA, as all sales are split 50-50.<\/span><\/p>\n

The gala begins with an intimate VIP cocktail reception for sponsors and host committee, followed by a dinner and an artist performance. The evening ends with a lively after-party, featuring music, dancing, and plenty of art-viewing! More than 100 artworks by the most exciting artists working in the region today will be on display and available for purchase online. Many of the participating artists were recommended to WPA by curators, arts professionals, and other artists, as well as sourced through our annual open call.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Both artists push and pull space and time with arching forms that have an exquisite malleability and grace. Geometric compositions are embedded with a rhythmical energy. Visual attractiveness and the expression of deep and sometimes disturbing or unsettling ideas live together, as each artist feels an urgency to address fundamental and dire environmental concerns. Open Latitudes: Mixed Media Works by Alonzo Davis and Chee Keong Kung\u00a0<\/em>presents the work of two contemporary artists who share a commonality rooted in exploration, discovery and improvisation. The use of geometric forms, gestural mark-making, the exploration of the tension between 2 and 3D, natural and man-made materials as well as working in series are integral to both artists\u2019 studio practices.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Art Month 2022 at Hickok Cole, Washington Project for the Arts (Oct 20-27, 2022)<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Every fall for over 20 years, Hickok Cole has partnered with Washington Project for the Arts<\/u><\/a><\/span> (WPA) to host an annual exhibit and fundraiser that has raised over $1.5 million in support of WPA\u2019s mission and the local arts community. Moving into Hickok Cole\u2019s new office in NoMa in 2021, Art Month became a hybrid event to manage raising funds in the midst of the lingering pandemic. The usual raucous fundraising event became a month-long social media campaign with a smaller party of pledged patrons at the end of October. Both floors of the new Union Market office were decked with 2021\u2019s curated art collection, with an accompanying virtual sales gallery for purchase by experienced and aspiring collectors alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

The large-scale sculpture, Ghost Dance,<\/i> by the artist Robert Stackhouse was gifted to the George Washington University as part of the Corcoran Study Collection in 2014.<\/b> <\/span>The Stackhouse work is a focal point for a juried exhibition of sculptural works by members of the Washington Sculptors Group that celebrate similar themes of renewal, rebirth, and sustainability explored in the Ghost Dance <\/i>piece.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Collectors’ Night 2022<\/i> <\/b>is our eagerly anticipated annual benefit, happening on Friday, June 3\u2014in-person for the first time in three years. Because it has been a while since we last physically gathered, we\u2019re doing things a little differently: 100\u2013150 artists and patrons will sit down for an elegant, family-style, dinner (catered by Susan Gage). Dinner will be followed by a larger, more raucous party with music and dancing (powered by DJ Geena Marie). The evening’s theme\u2014Your Presence is the Best Art<\/i>\u2014is inspired by the artist James Lee Byars (1932\u20131997) and celebrates our return to gathering together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collectors’ Night earned its name because of the extraordinary opportunity it offers guests to purchase museum-quality artwork by phenomenal artists. Guests will be treated to an in-person viewing of artworks that will be auctioned virtually on Artsy, June 3\u201317. What a Relief: small relief sculptures<\/i> is a juried exhibition of relief sculptures organized by The Phillips Collection and Washington Sculptors Group (WSG), and presented at Phillips@THEARC<\/a><\/u><\/span>.<\/span> The artists-me<\/span>mbers of WSG were invited to submit works that engage and expand upon the tradition of relief sculpture in contemporary terms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The word relief <\/i>comes from the Latin verb relivare<\/i>, to raise, implying that the sculpted material has been raised above its supporting background. From ancient Egyptian tombs to Greek and Roman temples to modern sculptural expressions, reliefs have been used around the world. Whether executed in low or high relief, telling a story or created for decorative purposes, the technique presents unique challenges as it combines two- and three-dimensional forms. The Bethesda Painting Awards<\/a> was established by local business owner Carol Trawick in 2005. Ms. Trawick has served as a community activist for more than 25 years in downtown Bethesda and established The Jim and Carol Trawick Foundation in 2007. She is the former Chair of the Maryland State Arts Council, Strathmore, Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District, Bethesda Urban Partnership, Inc. and founder of\u00a0The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Sculpture NOW 2020 presented by Washington Sculptors Group & McLean Project for the Arts (Sep 17-Nov 14, 2020)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

What a wonderful collection of strong, inventive and well- crafted work. The submissions covered a broad spectrum of approaches, from conceptually oriented, more focused on formal concerns, and often a dynamic balance of the two. These sculptures all represented a high level of creativity in both material construction and ideas. My task was to choose the works that live most completely in the world, the ones that walk the line between communicating the intentions of the artist with both clarity and mystery, while at the same time leaving open a space for personal viewer response and interpretation. As the juror and a viewer with some experience, I chose for inclusion the pieces that worked best for me in this way, the ones that most clearly asserted both their presence and their purpose and did so with the appropriate amount of skill. In addition, I sought to honor the diversity of the submissions by choosing works that represented a myriad of styles, approaches and subject matter. Escape Velocity at The Fred Schnider Gallery of Art (Jun 14-Aug 14, 2019)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Memory, the unconscious, and spatial experience of our shared concrete and cultural environments all contribute to the evolution of Chee-Keong Kung\u2019s work. Kung believes images can trigger reverberations at different depths within our psyche, recalling memories from years ago or fresh episodes from a week ago. Recurring motifs such as cloud shapes can suggest wafting smoke as well as uncontainable astronomical events. Respectively, they conjure in Kung\u2019s mind Taoist burnt offerings and torrential tropical storms from his upbringing in Singapore. Impressions from the media milieu\u2014magazine ads, news photos, comic books, other artists\u2019 works etc. \u2014 are transmuted into specific color combinations and geometric relationships on the canvas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
